Assessment

An occupational therapy assessment is essential in understanding what challenges your child may have and where those challenges originate. Assessment information is gathered through the use of standardized testing, clinical observations, parent interviews, interviews with disciplines involved with your child, and a school visit if necessary. This gives us a baseline from where therapy can start and allows for us to see progress over time. A written report is provided and reviewed in-person with the parent/caregiver, which helps them to better understand what occupational therapy is and how sensory integration, in addition to other therapies used in treatment, may help your child. Home and school strategies will be provided at this time. We will work together with the parent/caregiver and generate goals that are child and family-focused.

Occupational therapy online

Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic I am now offering teletherapy. I can work with you and your child together by video. Depending on the needs of your child, activities online could include building obstacle courses, mindfulness activities, art projects that focus on fine motor skills, handwriting skills, and online mazes or puzzles that address visual motor and perceptual skills. We also may work on gross motor skills through activities such as Simon Says, action bingo games, charades, and yoga.

Online occupational therapy can also be used as a way to develop a home program using the toys and materials you already have in your home. This not only allows for your child to practice what they learn in the clinic each week but on a daily basis in their home environment. This is essential for progress and allows for you, the parent, to better understand what works for your child.

Kindergarten Readiness

If your child is in preschool and you are interested in getting them ready for Kindergarten or if you know they will be participating in Kindergarten interviews for private school placements, it may be appropriate to have your child participate in an OT consultation (one hour) or a complete OT evaluation to determine what skills they need to practice before entering kindergarten. These skills may include fine motor skills, pre-handwriting skills, gross motor skills, and/or self-regulation.

Summer intensives

Intensives allow the child to participate in therapy 3-5 times each week for 1-2 months. An intensive may be an appropriate option for your child if it is difficult for them to participate in therapy during the school year or if you feel like they need an extra boost in development over the summer.

In-person Occupational Therapy

Therapy sessions are 50 minutes with time afterward to discuss what your child participated in for the hour. A specific frequency for therapy each week will be determined by your child’s needs. I use play and motivating activities paired with the sensory integration theory in addition to other adjunct treatments. This gives your child the appropriate challenge for them to foster developmental growth. Improvements in specific skill sets can be achieved most when a child is intrinsically motivated and engaged in an activity.

*In-person occupational therapy takes place at our clinic.

Outdoor occupational therapy

Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, if you would prefer to have your child outside instead of in the clinic I can provide therapy in Golden Gate Park, the beach, or a  backyard, schedule allowing. Activities may include swinging on the Ninja slack line, playing on tree trunks, obstacle courses, art projects using materials from nature, and mindfulness activities.

feeding consultation and individualized feeding sessions

I use the Sensory Oral Sequential (SOS) approach to assess and treat your child’s feeding concerns.  This approach is a fun and motivating way for kids to increase their repertoire of foods in their diet.  Parents will be a part of the treatment session which allows for them to learn how to help your child interact with different foods and how to set up snacks or meals at home so that meals are successful.

Consultation services and screening programs for early education

If you are unsure if your child is in need of an occupational therapy evaluation or if you would like to learn more about strategies that you can do at home with your child based on their needs, a consultation is an appropriate option. A consultation will last one hour in the clinic. During that time the parent is present with their child to gain an understanding of their needs and better understand how to help them in the home and community environments.
